3 Hour Adventure Run

Organizers: David Bakker (Event Director), David Bakker (Course Planner), Ken Bakker (Assistant)

Map: Skimikin

Please upload your GPS tracks at the link above on the Sage Nextcloud. We will check on tracks again later this week, so it isn't too late to upload. Please ensure you have your name IN THE NAME OF THE FILE (e.g. "Simon_B.gpx") before uploading the file. If you make a mistake on the first upload, just upload another file with the correct file name, or send an email to contact@sageorienteering.ca to let us know which uploaded track name is yours.

Thanks for coming out!

Registration deadline extended until Saturday evening, or 35 participants (that's how many maps will be printed). You can show up on the day with no pre-registration also, but also no map guarantee, and you will be paying a late registration surcharge.

Instead of heading back to Larch Hills, our annual spring Adventure Run will be at Skimikin instead! A 3 Hour (or 1.5 Hour if you prefer) Adventure Run where you collect as many checkpoints as you can in any order you want.

Location, Parking, and Map

This event will take place on the brand new Skimikin map starting from the main day use trailhead. This is the large dirt parking lot at the entrance to the campground. There is an outhouse at the parking location.

The map is all you need to complete the course. It will have all the checkpoints clearly marked on it, along with clearly showing which areas are out of bounds (including sensitive riparian areas and private land). A compass will be beneficial (the map is oriented to magnetic north, no declination needed), but not needed. You must carry a whistle with you on course. The map has two different parts of it, one that is on the better side of things, and part that is a little bit worse.

  • Better Part: Most of the map is a little bit worse than our regular orienteering maps, but it still has 5 meter contours, trails, water features (creeks, ponds, marshes and lakes), and computer generated vegetation density. This is different from our usual maps where we go and manually map vegetation, and smaller point features like boulders and knolls. This map is not perfectly fieldchecked, and is missing detail in certain areas.
  • Worse Part: We could not find basemap data for the core area around the lake, so it is an entirely fieldchecked map, but is simplified so there is no vegetation mapping, and contours are less accurate. Trails and the like are well mapped.

Registration

Registration will be done on this website, using the green "+Register" buttons next to the course time of your choice. You can change on the day if you like. Payment will be made on site, cash only.

If you are not yet a member of the Sage Orienteering Club, you must become a member in order to participate. Membership is very cheap ($15/adult, and half that if it is your first time), and can be completed entirely online here.

Registration Deadline: Thursday, June 16th at 23:59 (11:59pm).

Prices:

  • $10 per Person
  • Family Maximum: $20

New Orienteers

We are trying to make this event friendly to new orienteers. We are offering very beginner friendly courses, and will ensure we have someone available at registration to help you with getting started in the sport. We look forward to meeting you!

Courses

Everyone gets exactly the same map, it has a mix of different checkpoint difficulties and distances from the start/finish. This event will skew towards easier and more on trail navigation than our typical events.

Class Options

You get a choice as to how long you want to be out there, and we will compare results and routes within two different time constraints:

  • 1.5 Hour Adventure Run (you have one and a half hours to get as many as you can).
  • 3 Hour Adventure Run (We're guessing you can figure out how many hours you have to get as many as you can).

Schedule

This is a one day, in person, event on Sunday June 19th.

  • 09:30 - Registration Opens
  • 09:50 - Maps Handed Out - Plan Your Route Now!
  • 10:00 - Start
  • 11:30 - 1.5 Hour Finish
  • 13:00 - 3 Hour Finish

Results

SI Air timing will be used for this event. Timing chips for borrowing are including in your registration price. We also encourage you to track your run/walk with a GPS, so we can put together an animation of where everyone went. We will be manually calculating your points, and will publish results and routes once the event is over.

Scoring

Depending on how far the checkpoint is from the start and how difficult it is to find it is worth a different amount of points. The most challenging checkpoints are worth 120 points, intermediate difficulty checkpoints are 80 points, and the closest and easiest are worth 40.

For each minute that you or your team is back late past your time limit, a penalty of 20 points deducted from your total score.
