How It Works
This event is a 1.5 hour score O. You have the option to run or bike. Some controls will be off the trails and may require some walking/running to reach the control. You will be given instructions at 1:05 pm and given your map at 1:10 pm. There will be 20 min. to plan your route (a highlighter or a pencil can be handy). Be sure to get there in time to sign in, get your SI stick, and be ready when the maps are handed out. The controls are worth 40, 80, or 120 points. The idea is to get as many points as you can in 1.5 hours. You lose 40 minutes for every minute you are late. The event runs from 1:30 to 3 pm.
Schedule
- 12:00 pm -- Sign-in opens
- 1:05 pm -- Instructions given
- 1:10 pm -- Maps handed out -- Plan your route!
- 1:30 pm -- Start
- 3:00 pm -- Finish time limit -- Don't be late!
Location
The start/finish and parking is in the day use parking lot at the entrance to the Skimikin Recreation Site. We will be using the trails surrounding Skimikin Lake. The trails south of the road are relatively flat. North of the road there is a lot more elevation gain.
This map is still a work in progress so there will be small areas not mapped yet or it may just be roads and trails mapped.
Cost
- Adults -- $10
- Juniors (20 and under) -- $5
Camping
There is camping at the Skimikin Lake Rec site. More info at:
https://www.sitesandtrailsbc.ca/resource/REC1562
The Mt Ida self directed event will still be open if you want to do it as well.
Safety
If you are relatively new to orienteering or under 14 years old it is recommended you go in a group of at least 2. There will be a cell phone number when you sign in that you can contact if you need to during the event. There will be no water on course so be sure to bring your own water. There could be bears in the area. We will have a better idea as we check out control locations in the next 2 weeks. Thie Recreation site is run by the backcountry horsemen. There will be instructions of how to approach riders before the event starts.
