There is a ski-orienteering event happening at Larch Hills! Please note that this is a Larch Hills Nordics event, not a Sage Orienteering Club event, so you do not need any Sage Orienteering Club membership, but you will need to be either a member of Larch Hills Nordic or to pay their day use trail fee (see below).
Schedule:
- Check in between 9:30 and 10:00 am
- Start between 10 and 10:30 am.
- Must be back by noon.
Registration: Email Phil Wallensteen at wallfen@gmail.com with the number of people in your group and which course you would like to do. This number is needed so we know how many maps to print.
Cost
: Cash donations appreciated to help pay for maps and the use of the
orienteering equipment. If
you are not a Larch Hills club member trail fee information can be
found at https://skilarchhills.ca/day-fees-memberships/
Courses:
The race format has changed from the original format due to snow conditions. Most controls are located close to trackset trails.
- Course 1 - 3.1 km.
- Course 2 - 5.1 km
- Course 3 - 5.7 km Contols can be a bit more technical to find than course 2.
The distance is a measure in a straight line between points. You can expect to have to ski up to another 50%. Most controls are located close to a main trail with not much use of backcountry trails due to the current snow conditions. Past years classic skis were required. This year it could be done on skate skis.
How it works:
When you register on the morning of the event you will be given an SI stick for your group. When you reach a control (checkpoint) you punch it with the SI stick you were given and it records the time you were at the control. You must find the controls in the order shown on the map. Once you finish you come into the chalet and download your time from the SI stick.
For those who are new to orienteering there will be further instructions at 10am.
All skiers under 14 years old must ski with an adult. It is preferable to ski with at least one other person. If skiing alone please take a cell phone and we will have a phone number for you to contact in the case of an emergency.
