Post-Event

A reminder to all participants that the olive green colour is out of bounds, and you are not allowed to cross it. This symbol is used to protect private property and public garden beds. Even if something looks like it could be a public walkway, if we have mapped it as olive green, it was intentionally mapped as such after looking at the actual land ownership and government survey maps. It is important to respect the out of bounds symbols so that we can maintain good relationships with other user groups and land owners and maintain access for this unique sport in public areas.

Overview

This is the first in a series of three urban orienteering training opportunities this autumn. Due to the continuing exceptional global circumstances, all three will be self-directed trainings, where you have an entire week to do the course on your own time.

For all of these urban trainings we will be placing irrigation pin flags at the control locations, and individually emailing out maps. You print out the pdf to get your own map (or if you are very careful, keep it on your cellphone, though we recommend printing it out) to use. As we will be leaving the pin flags out for over a week, and there are other area users, please keep in mind that some pin flags could be missing when you run the event, though we hope this will not be the case.

Location and Map

This event is in a new location in the Kettle Valley neighbourhood of Kelowna.

The map is brand new this autumn. We have not had time to fully field check this map, so there may be a few inaccuracies. Having said this, the map should be good enough to enjoy some fun urban orienteering!

Courses

The start/finish location is by the Quilchena Water Park parking lot off Quilchena Drive in Kettle Valley.

If your printed map is black and white, you can carry a cell phone with the pdf on it to check the map in colour if you need it, which can be helpful to distinguish some of the map features. The Staples self-service print shop is now open and has colour laser printers that cost $0.46 per copy.

This is an urban environment and there are many other users and traffic on the low-volume residential streets you will be crossing. Please respect other area users and be extra cautious when crossing streets or alleyways on which there may be vehicular traffic.

Beginner: 1.9 km straight line distance without too much extra distance from running around uncrossable obstacles. Route choices are fairly straightforward without too many big decisions to be made.

Advanced: 3.1 km straight line distance with a fair amount of extra distance from running around uncrossable obstacles. There are more options for route choices.

Precautions

  • Read through the Orienteering Canada Self-Guided Orienteering Guidelines.
  • Please stay home if you have any symptoms of COVID-19 or illness.
  • Please stay home if you have been in close contact with a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19 in the last 14 days.
  • Only participate in orienteering activities with individuals from your COVID-19 bubble.
  • Stay at least 2 metres away from all other area users and do not congregate at the trailheads or control sites.
  • Do not touch the control (checkpoint) flags – just get within 2 metres or so.
  • Walk/run with extreme caution to avoid any injuries.
  • In urban environments, be extra cautious around streets and alleyways and watch out for traffic.

Cost

These trainings are being offered as a free mental health service to all Sage Orienteering Club members. Now is a great time to go for a run by yourself or in a very small group in the beautiful Okanagan.

How it Works

  1. Register your Sage Orienteering Club membership online. Membership Registration (including payment) and waiver (youth waiver, adult waiver) both need to be filled in online this year.
  2. Send an email to Kevin using the Remote Training Registration button in the Quick Links section to register for the course of your choice and let us know how many of you are going. We will email you a map individually - so make sure your email address with your WhyJustRun account is accurate.
  3. Run the course whenever you want during the times when the event is open. If you are interested in comparing results & routes with others, record a GPS track on your smartwatch or phone.
  4. (Optional) Upload a .gpx file (you can export this from Strava, Garmin Connect, Suunto App / Sports Tracker, Attackpoint, and many others) to our website (link will be posted shortly after registration is open) which will calculate your split times. We will also then overlay all the GPS tracks onto the map together so you can compare route choices with others. We might not be able to gather socially, but we can still talk about our route choices digitally.

How You Can Help

These events are running entirely on volunteer power. We would love some help if you would be willing to pick up controls at a specified time at the end of each event, and hand them on to the next volunteer who will put them out.
