Overview
This is a self directed event with an advanced course (compass definitely a benefit). There is also an intermediate course that follows trails. The idea for the intermediate course was to create a loop for people to run who have not been on these trails before.
To do the complete intermediate course you must print 2 maps.
This is probably the best terrain we have in Salmon Arm for orienteering.
The controls are orange and white flagging tape hung with a clothes pin. The controls number is on the duct tape on the orange flagging.
The map has contours, trails and features such as rock, marshes, and boulders mapped in the area of the courses. The map is still a work in progress. The vegetation is computer generated with no field verification.
Access and Parking
To access the start you turn into the Silver Creek community park. The road splits right away. Turn left on Wall Creek road. The parking area is 4.6 km from the pavement. There is a wide area with old culverts piled on the side. There are a couple steep hills with loose rocks but should be driveable with any vehicle with reasonable clearance. There will be a walk to the start. Take the old road to the left at the junction just past the parking.
I did see a bear driving in the first day. These are long courses and it can get warm on this hillside in the afternoon so be sure to take water.
