Organizer: Brendan Matthews (Event Director)

Description:

The Sage O Club is again offering a night orienteering event in the Grasslands just north of Kamloops. The Grasslands after dark are amazing. If you haven't navigated at night you should consider trying this. Definitely adds a new factor to orienteering. Weather should cooperate. It will be chilly but hopefully no precipitation.

For driving directions and "rules" see the attachments. If any questions please email me ASAP (brendan_matthews@outlook.com). See you there.

Schedule:

Registration - 5:00 pm

First Starts  - 6:00

Details:

Regular Orienteering format. Not a Score-O. There will be two courses, one longer and more difficult then the other. Maps will be provided. You will need a headlamp of course.

Please, NO DOGS. There may be cattle on the course. Thank you.

If you're unsure about your abilities check with the starter as soon as you arrive and we'll get you going safely.

Driving Directions:

In North Kamloops, head north on Batchelor Drive from the major intersection of Westsyde Road/8th Street/Bachelor Drive. Driving through the subdivision of Batchelor Heights for about 1 km the road becomes Lac du Bois Road. Stay on this well maintained gravel road to the start area which is between the 7 and 8k road markers at about 7.5 km. There will be orange and white Orienteering direction signs.

Remember, this is a well used road so be sure to park well off to the side and be cautious when a pedestrian.

Rules:

Participants find control points in the order specified on the map as quickly as possible.

Time limit on the course is 90 minutes. Whether or not you finish your course, you must check in with the starter before you leave the area. We will begin starting people at near FULL dark. The course will close 2 hours after the last start.

Equipment. Everyone is required to carry a whistle (three blasts if in trouble), a headlamp, a compass and a watch. There are some bushes and small trees on the course so eye protection is recommended. Be careful near wire fences.

You can be either (A) a Recreational Participant or (B) a BC Championships Participant.

  • A.Recreational Participants

The emphasis is to have fun safely navigating at night. Relax and enjoy the challenge.

Headlamps can be of any brightness.

Participants may travel in groups of two or more.

  • B.BC Championships Participants

You too are supposed to have fun.

No Train Lights Rule: Headlamps cannot be excessively bright. Standard “Petzil type” headlamps are great. If in doubt bring a spare and check with the Course Official. This event is only over 90 minutes so the course is relatively small. An excessively bright headlamp would provide an unfair advantage. With a crazy bright spotlight you are always welcome to enter the recreational division.

Participants must compete singly.
