There is a local orienteering meet this Sunday in the grasslands south of Kamloops. There will be the usual three courses: short-5 controls 2 km, medium 11 controls 4.5 km , and long 14 controls 6 km. Of course, these are only approximate.
The area is east of Nicola Lake with open rolling grassland and small groups of trees. The views alone are worth the drive. This is a seldom used map so come out and enjoy the day in a new area.
Driving directions:
From Kamloops. Leave town on hwy 5A (NOT the Coquihalla hwy!)heading south to Merritt. Drive about 66.5 km (passing the Douglas Lake Road at about 63.5 km) to Penask Lake Road where you will turn left (east) onto a gravel road. Follow Penask Lake Road for about 11.5 km to the site.
From Merritt. Leave the Coquihalla hwy and drive north on hwy 5A for about 22 km (passing Quilchena at about 19.5 km) and turn right (east) on Penask Lake Road. Follow this for about 11.5 km to the site.
