McQueen Lake Night Orienteering Event

General Information

Score Orienteering format.Participants find as many control points as possible in any order in a defined period of time. Maps will be provided ahead of the start time to allow time to decide a route.

Time limit on the course is 90 minutes. After this time every minute (or portion of) you are late subtracts 5 minutes from your overall score. Course will close 120 minutes after the start.

Each control “punched” is worth 20 points. If you “punch” the same control twice there is neither penalty nor increase in your score. Your score will be the total of all controls visited minus any penalty. In the event of a tie the fastest time will be used. If tie still not broken – rock/paper/scissors.

Once you “punch” in, do not hang around the control flag, please move away before deciding your next route so as not to telegraph the control flag’s location to others.

Equipment. Everyone is required to carry a whistle (three blasts if in trouble), a headlamp and a compass. There are some bushes and small trees on the course so eye protection is recommended.

There will be cattle so dogs are not permitted.

Safety bearing – WEST

You can be either (A) a Recreational Participant or (B) a BC Championships Participant.

  1. Recreational Participants

The emphasis is to have fun safely navigating at night. Relax and enjoy the challenge.

Headlamps can be of any brightness.

Participants may travel in groups of two or more.

  1. BC Championships Participants

You too are supposed to have fun.

Headlamps cannot be excessively bright. Standard “Petzil type” headlamps are OK. If in doubt check with the Course Official (bring a spare). This event is only over 90 minutes so the course is relatively small. An excessively bright headlamp would provide an unfair advantage. With a crazy bright spotlight you are always welcome to enter the recreational division.

Participants must compete singly.

Driving direction to McQueen Lake area.

In North Kamloops, head north on Batchelor Drive from the major intersection of Westsyde Road/8th Street/Bachelor Drive. Driving through the subdivision of Batchelor Heights for about 1 km the road becomes Lac du Bois Road . Stay on this well maintained gravel road to the start area at 10 plus km from the major intersection. There will be orange and white Orienteering signs.

Remember, this is a well used road so be sure to park well off to the side.
